Prince Charles ‘black spider’ letters: The Prince of Wales’ struggle to remain impartial
To my mind the idea that any of these letters represent political interference is warped. What they do show is a King in waiting genuinely interested in supporting rural communities.
Nicknamed “black spider” after HRH’s distinctive handwriting, a series of letters written by the Prince of Wales and sent to Government Ministers in 2004 and 2005 have been published. They contain a wealth of detail about how Prince Charles would like the country to be run. Their publication follows a 10-year legal battle to make them public. Explaining his need to express his dearly held beliefs, Charles has previously said: “I don’t want my grandchildren or yours to come along and say to me: ‘Why the hell didn’t you come and do something about this?'” The correspondence in full is available from the Cabinet Office here
